About Reed-Custer Choirs
Below you will find many of the activities and elements of the choral curriculum at RC255:
Music Literacy: At Reed-Custer Community School District 255, we use a standard-based, hands-on method to approach reading music. As your child’s music teacher, I believe it is my first priority to teach my students to be musically literate. This includes both standard and non-standard forms of notation. Using our voices and different instruments in the classroom, students will be able to read, notate, analyze, compose, and perform with correct musical notation.
Music History: The other side of our music curriculum is the understanding of the development of music: how it connects to our culture, other cultures, and the role it plays in our own lives. Students will actively demonstrate and apply an understanding of music history through performances, games, and activities.
Performance & Music Appreciation:
Each grade-level (4-8) has at least one opportunity to perform during the school year. Performances are our time to not only show our talents, but what we have learned in music class and how we have grown as musicians. Our performances are designed to accompany our music curriculum with a polished understanding of why we are participating in the particular performance, and how it is relevant to our lives.
Students in grades 4-5 perform in special grade-level programs. 4th graders perform on the recorder. 7th and 8th Grade have the opportunity to participate or perform in the Spring Musical. This is an official, Broadway, Jr. Production that has two performance dates and many rehearsals throughout the year. 5th grade students have the opportunity to join the school Show Choir, which has multiple performances throughout the year. 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students have choir as a curricular class, with required performances, listed in the choral handbook. 7th & 8th grade students have the opportunity to audition for an extra-curricular madrigal group that combines with the madrigals at the high school to perform. All middle school choral students can audition for ILMEA district choirs in the fall. All middle school choral students may choose to participate in solo & ensemble contest in the Spring semester.
I look forward to working with your child in developing their knowledge, appreciation, and skills in music this year. As a music educator, I will strive for excellence in all aspects of my position, and will dedicate myself to the continued aspiration of making our music program the best it can possibly be. It’s going to be a great year! Go Stars and Panthers!
