5th Grade Choir at Reed-Custer Elementary is designed to be a continuing curriculum for 5th grade students who wish to grow their technique and knowledge of singing. Through discovery and practice, students gain a well-rounded music education with emphasis on music literacy, music history, performance, and appreciation. Music Literacy: At RCES, we use a standard-based, hands-on method to approach reading music. As your child’s music teacher, I believe it is my first priority to teach my students to be musically literate. This includes both standard and non-standard forms of notation. Using our voice, students will be able to read, notate, analyze, compose, and perform with correct musical notation. Music History: The other side of the scale in our music curriculum is the understanding of the development of music: how it connects to our culture, other cultures, and the role it plays in our own lives. Students actively demonstrate and apply an understanding of music history through performances, games, and activities. At the end of the 5th Grade, we will participate in an experience that is meaningful and memorable—our 5th Grade choral concert, which is combined with the RCES Band. Performance & Music Appreciation: Performances are our time to not only show our talents, but what we have learned in music and how we have grown as musicians. Our performances at RCES are designed to accompany our music curriculum with a polished understanding of why we are participating in the particular performance, and how it is relevant to our lives.
This year, our concert will take place on May 16th, 2018 at 6:30pm, and is combined with the RCES Band.
I look forward to working with your child in developing their knowledge, appreciation, and skills in music this year. As your child’s music teacher, I will strive for excellence in all aspects of my position, and will dedicate myself to the continued aspiration of making our music program the best it can possibly be. It’s going to be a great year!
